Los Angeles' First Consumer Sentiment Index - a new forecasting tool for businesses and government

Marc Weidenmier, Director of the Lowe Institute of Political Economy, Claremont McKenna College

The new Los Angeles Consumer Sentiment Index from Claremont McKenna College’s Lowe Institute is the first localized metropolitan consumer sentiment index.  The Index’s guidance on future consumption activity by Los Angeles area residents will be key to assessing the overall prospects for the local economy. Consumption accounts for, on average, 70% of all US economic activity. Consumer sentiment can vary enormously across the country with most national surveys reflecting observations drawn from the east coast, making it less likely they will be able to capture the actual state of affairs in Southern California. The Lowe Institute Los Angeles Consumer Sentiment Index takes the pulse of the local economy and offers localized knowledge to improve forecasting and decision making. The survey provides some insight into how people feel about job prospects which can be an indicator of whether they are likely to stay in their current positions rather than risk making a move.  Businesses can use the data to help manage inventory as the survey offers data to gauge future consumer purchasing trends.  With the survey offering data by age and income levels, it may also aid businesses in determining how to target their marketing efforts.
